I had never tried a FIG until this year, 2015. I live in Perth, WA and I honestly never really come across them in large quantities before until we stopped by the Bunbury Famers Market on our way home from our camping trip. My mum has a fig tree on her property in Denmark but the parrots always get to them first (Mother you need to net that immediately).
Interestingly the fig is not a fruit but Flower Receptacles (is that a sea creature?) and have been apart of the Mediterranean diet for thousands of years. The fig does not require the bee or wind for pollination because it has a symbiotic relationship with its own species of tiny pollinator wasps, quite fascinating really.
FIG SHELF LIFE & STORAGE
Fresh figs bruise very easily and spoil quickly. When buying them it is best to choose the green ones which should last 5-7 days in the fridge or purple if you are using them straight away. You can get dried figs if you want a longer shelf life but keep in mind they are more concentrated in sugar.
FIG HEALTH BENEFITS
IRON– Increased absorption when eaten with citrus or Vitamin C foods (salads, berries, kiwi fruit).

FIBRE– Known as Pectin that may help lower cholesterol, may assist in people who suffer constipation however may also cause laxative effect if eaten in excess.
